If countries had a mouth, lips, tongue and a vocal box you could be sure that the answer to this question would be a unanimous worldwide ‘We do! We do!’ Well, sadly the majority of them would be disappointed as a number of international surveys led by the global contraceptive brand Durex have concluded that some of us are definitely getting much – much – more than others! Of course, here we are talking about how frequently we are engaging in the act of sex rather than how long, passionate or necessarily good it was, but there has to be some truth to the old adage that of you throw darts, soon enough you’ll hit the bull’s-eye. And no – the UK didn’t make the top ten….
5th – Italy
For a country where most men don’t leave home until their thirties, there’s no doubt that the Italians have done well to make fifth while keeping out of Mamma’s eye. In truth there are few more romantic places on Earth – quite literally seeing as it was home to the romantic renaissance movement – with the languid warmth of the rural south offset by the flash of the cosmopolitan north. No doubt a diet packed with aphrodisiacs, delicious wines and a relaxed approach to life helps too.
4th – China
Here’s a fact – Beijing alone has over 5000 registered sex shops. For a population of 11 million, that works out as one sex shop for around every 2000 people. Compare this to the UK where most average sized towns are lucky to have one or two, and we can see where we’re going with this. It would seem that just as the Chinese economy is expanding, so too are the new middle class – and it would appear that enjoy expressing their new financial freedoms in the bedroom!
3rd – Russia
Can’t really blame them can you? It’s freezing outside, vodka’s a couple of dollars a bottle and the lady-folk are commonly appreciated as some of the most beautiful in the world. Also, if you ever have the chance to watch Russian TV – just don’t. Have sex instead, it keeps you warm and happy within.
2nd – Brazil
Home of the world’s biggest and best carnivals, it’s no coincidence that the vast majority of the tens of thousands of participants perform either pretty much bare naked or dressed in highly sexualised costumes. Exotic, flamboyant and knowing quite how effortlessly sexy it is, Brazil enjoys a huge amount of quite literally hot sex.
1st – Greece
Forget the Romans and their taste for an orgy or ten; they were merely trying to emulate the passions of the Greeks, the people who pretty much invented the sexuality that the world has enjoyed for the last two and a half thousand years. The Greeks take their sex as seriously, and with as much pride, as the Olympics (indeed, in ancient incarnations the two quite commonly went hand in hand).
So there’s a lowdown on who seems (or says they are!) having the most sex, and it’s fair to say that the global sex statistics conducted by Durex are going to be as close to the truth as we’re likely to get. However, there’s nothing stopping us playing catch up…
